Sorry for the superlong post I made just before. I realize it is a lot of words, and was probably painstakingly boring for anyone who is not me. Kudos to anyone who read it all the way through. This entry should hopefully be a little more entertaining, as I'm now working on designs for my dragon!
I still do not have a specific model in mind, but once again here is the black dragon from Dragons of Justice web site:

Something a little cuter like this guy:

More cartoony-stylized:

Any of the other dragon pictures at this site: http://www.flux.utah.edu/~aclement/templair/collection/
More alien / devilish:

Mushu, from Mulan, anyone?

Maybe a Chinese dragon:

There's the puppet (?) from the movie Dragonslayer, which I have yet to see:
And, of course, Saphira, in book/illustration form and her CG counterpart:
Opinions! Which dragon design do you guys like the best? I'm also open to other suggestions if you want to send me links to other pictures. I am aware that there are many other dragon movies out there besides the ones mentioned (some bad, some terrible), and most of them I've probably seen. Sometime between now and the end of the semester I think I will refresh my memory, however.

Do you have any thoughts for the design of your kid yet? I think you said something like the kid from the Incredibles, only maybe a little chubbier...
It might be helpful to design both characters at the same time, so that they match. Like, if the kid is chubby, maybe the dragon should be chubby, too.
I kind of like the second dragon image you posted, but only because it's so cute, and the story you're telling lends itself to cuteness. That dragon would look adorable sitting on someone's shoulder!
The first dragon, the black one on the rock is really neat, and if you wanted to make a scary dragon so that the reveal at the end where he's tiny is a bigger surprise, I'd probably go with something more like that.
Great reference images. I especially like the red dragon on the snow.
There is no reason that the dragon can't be ferocious even though hes tiny!
feels the dragon needs to be a combo of awesome and cute.. i like that red dragon at the top. but make him lovable
I really like your reference images...esp the second one
